To maximize the performance of any sealant tape, the surface to which the tape is applied must be clean and prepared properly. A properly prepared surface will allow the tape to achieve its greatest bond. The better the bond, the lower the chance that the tape will peel, dis-bond or separate from the surface at some point in the future.
Step 1
Remove all dirt, dust, debris, contaminants and foreign material from the surface. Cleaning can be performed using pressure washing, water and detergent, scrubbing, compressed air, or vacuuming. Surfaces exposed to the elements for many years will likely require a greater degree of cleaning to remove embedded dirt and debris.
Solvent cleaning may be needed on some plastics. Never clean plastics with mineral spirits. Use an oil free solvent such as acetone, xylene, or methylethyl ketone (MEK). When using solvents, follow proper safety precautions and use appropriate personal protective gear. Solvents are flammable and every care should be taken to avoid using them near ignition sources and breathing solvent vapors.
Step 2
Rinse the surface cleanly with fresh water and allow it to dry. Test the cleanliness of the surface by rubbing your fingers across it. No dust or dirt should appear on your fingertips. If dirt or dust is present on your fingers, you’ll need to perform additional cleaning. If you remain unsure about the cleanliness, take a small piece of 4EvaSeal cut from a roll and apply it to the surface to test the adhesion. Firmly press the small sample onto the surface and remove it. If the tape is easily removed and peels cleanly from the surface, additional cleaning is required.
Step 3
Apply 4EvaSeal to the target surfaces. Best results are achieved when the application is performed at temperatures above 50°F. Do not apply if the surface is wet or dirty (see Step #2 above). Firmly press the tape onto the surface. The use of a roller will assist in assuring that the tape is well bonded. Rollers can be steel or silicone. Silicone rollers are the recommended rollers as they to avoid damage to the tape.
Following these simple three steps will result in along lasting repair. Often times skipping these steps will result in repairs which are only temporary leading to further water damage and more costly repairs in the future.
